Superior Performance a Large Paratransit Contract

Orange County is located between Los Angeles and San Diego. The Orange County Transportation Authority provides paratransit and fixed route bus services to the county, and since 2006, Veolia Transportation has managed and operated the service for OCTA. We operate 350 paratransit vehicles and 180 fixed route buses, transporting over one million passengers a year. We also broker the services of a local taxi company, which we use to augment our paratransit service in busy time periods.

Veolia Transportation has maintained industry-leading, on-time performance levels since April 2007, averaging 93%. We also have a strong safety track record, which is nearly three times better than the national average. To sustain these results, we have implemented a number of innovative safety training, motivational and incentive programs for drivers.

We have worked very closely with our client to develop strong processes, systems and IT infrastructure for tracking, reporting and analyzing performance. OCTA is committed to enhancing its infrastructure for management information, and we are working closely with them to achieve this goal.

We have also developed some important innovations using technology to enhance operational performance. Our Business Improvement IT team partnered with our OCTA team to develop a system that identifies trips where the driver is in danger of arriving late due to trafic congestion. The trips are then called out to dispatchers with sufficient advance notice so they can take effective action in real time. This has enabled dispatchers to modify drivers’ instructions and schedules in order to take better care of passengers. This is a dynamic system that gives our dispatchers better tools to improve their day-to-day performance. This is an example of the kind of innovation we take great pride in bringing to our clients.

We operate 350 alternate fuel vehicles for OCTA. We have developed specialized skills on our maintenance team to deal with the requirements of these vehicles.

Our Orange County team is also working hard to enhance our outreach programs, to better listen to and connect with the disabled community. We are committed to listening to their needs and concerns and doing everything we can to address them.
